As I’m sure most of you remember, a couple weeks ago was Easter weekend. In the church, Easter is like the Super Bowl of the yearly schedule. We put our best foot forward, hoping to show new people that we’re not as boring as that church down the street, and that our theology is better than that guy they see on TBN. It’s one of the high points of our year and we try to make sure that people feel comfortable and welcome. However, Easter isn’t the end of the Christian calendar. It’s the beginning.
Easter represents the beginning of new life to those who accept Christ. No longer are we bound by the old covenant. He has created a new covenant for us, the law fulfilled through the blood sacrifice of His son, Jesus. Do we only remember that new beginning once a year, or is it something that we should be constantly reminded of? There is a song by Vicky Beeching which I love (fair warning to POCF readers, you’ll probably be singing it soon) called “The Wonder of the Cross”. The words describe that feeling that I’m getting at, that we should never forget the wonder of what was accomplished on the cross.
O precious sight, my Savior stands,
Dying for me with outstretched hands.
O precious sight, I love to gaze,
Remembering salvation’s day,
Remembering salvation’s day.
Though my eyes linger on this scene,
May passing time and years not steal
The power with which it impacts me,
The freshness of its mystery,
The freshness of its mystery.May I never lose the wonder,
The wonder of the cross.
May I see it like the first time
Standing as a sinner lost,
Undone by mercy and left speechless,
Watching wide eyed at the cost.
May I never lose the wonder,
The wonder of the cross.Behold the God-man crucified,
The perfect sinless sacrifice.
As blood ran down those nails and wood,
History was split in two, yes,
History was split in two.
Behold the empty wooden tree,
His body gone, alive and free.
We sing with everlasting joy,
For sin and death have been destroyed, yes,
Sin and death have been destroyed.
Even though Easter is over, and the Super Bowl of the church is finished for another year, let’s not experience a letdown. Let’s push through and seek more of God, seek more people to introduce to our Savior, and seek less of ourselves. What do you say, church?
