Take a Stand – What Price Things?

While listening and reading the coverage of the Greensburg, KS tornado, it struck me what many people were saying. The first thing out of the mouths of people trying to help was “I can’t imagine what it’s like to lose everything you have.”

Have they really lost everything? If they are still alive, they still have breath. If they haven’t lost any family members, they still have kin. If they haven’t lost friends, they still have community. The main thing that I hope they don’t lose, but am afraid some of them might, is faith.

When something like this happens, it is more than likely some will say “why did God allow this to happen?” I don’t know of a good way to answer this. Sometimes we bury ourselves in pity and are never able to see the good things that come of it. When I was a senior in high school, I thought I had the world on a string. Our football team was pretty good, our basketball team was coming off a state tournament berth, and heck, I was a senior. Only one more year of high school. Three weeks into football season, I blew out my knee. The doctor said that I would need surgery at some point, but I asked if I could still play sports. He said I could, but I wasn’t going to be able to do both sports. I would have to choose one or the other.

I had spent all summer getting ready for basketball season. I had been the sixth man the previous year and was anxious to prove I could be a starter. I had worked on shooting, dribbling, anything I could think of. Whenever we had some downtime on the farm, I would be playing basketball in the front yard.
